Lately the days are long, and I mean loooooooooong. With the
COVID-19 and quarantine, we have been looking for fun things to do that are not
technology based. A lot of the school work assigned is on my daughter's Chromebook. We decided to do a fun, simple, pen and paper craft. We
made a bunny hat!

This is super easy! Just
print, we used cardstock paper so the hat would be durable and the ears would
stick up. Plus I found some fun neon green card stock in our stash of
paper, and why not make a neon green bunny?!?! Once it was printed, we colored it. DO NOT cut the parts out before you color it. It is
much easier to color when it is a full sheet. Added bonus, you also do not have to worry about coloring in the lines, since we are cutting out the pieces we need.

You can go as crazy as you like when coloring. We got a bit creative and added patterns and polka dots to our bunny. My daughter also was super creative and added bangs to the bunny. She cut fringes on a scrap piece of paper and added them to the bunny. Once the bunny is decorated
the way you want, cut the bunny out.

There are two parts to the
bunny ears, the large bunny ear is the outside, and the small inside of bunny
ear part layers in front of the larger ear to give it some dimension. You
can glue, staple or tape the bunny parts together, whichever works best for
you.

Yes, there really was a Grandma, and we happen to stumble onto pumpkins.

Grandma Sandow, my Grandmother, the mother of my father, was the Grandma of Grandma's Pumpkin Patch. Her name was Delia Joan Sandow. Her maiden name was Owens and she was a remarkably strong person. She was born in 1922, grew up during the depression, assembled machine guns at the AC Delco plant in Flint during the war, and was a wife of a returning solider, mother to five children, and the person who held everyone together.

All her life she was taking care of someone or something. Her husband worked at Dow Chemical and she tended to the kids and the farm while he was at work and had dinner on the table when he got home. Grandma's Pumpkin Patch was originally a pig farm and had over 200 pigs, chickens, cows, horses and other farm animals to take care of. Grandma Sandow tended to the farm and helped with the crops in the field. She was always working and was grateful for the opportunity to have a farm. After the depression, she didn't take anything for granted. Even in her 80's she was still saving pieces of soap to mend into a larger piece of soap. Soap was a luxury in the depression and she never took a luxury for granted.

Grandma & Grandpa Sandow around 1950

When her children grew up and married Grandma then started taking care of her grandchildren, along with the farm. He husband passed away in 1984 and she continued to care for the farm. Although our family no longer raised crops after Grandpa's passing, we always had animals on the farm.

Once the grand kids became old enough to do the chores, and drive, and take care of themselves Grandma started getting ill. We thought she was going to pass away, and were concerned about Grandma. It turned out Grandma was not sick........she felt useless. Her whole life was focused on caring for others and now she felt she wasn't needed. He son Al had an idea....that just might work.

Al challenged Grandma to a pumpkin growing contest. Pumpkins are one of the longest growing crops, they need roughly 120 days to mature. We plant them around Memorial Day and harvest them in September. Al planted a pumpkin plant back by the barn for him to tend to and one in Grandma's back yard for her to take care of. Grandma was determined to win this pumpkin growing contest! Back in a time before the Internet and box book stores, Grandma went to the local library to look up pumpkin growing tips and the local hardware to talk to the garden specialist. She found all sorts of trick from ph levels to pouring milk on the vine of the pumpkin. She tried them all and ended up with a 500 pound pumpkin. Al mysteriously only had a 2 pound pumpkin.

Grandma and her winning pumpkin

One pumpkin plant can produce up to 10 pumpkins. Al and Grandma had too many pumpkins and started selling the extra pumpkins at a stand in Grandma's front yard. This was no ordinary stand, it came with full customer service. With her farmer hospitality, Grandma would invite customers into her house for cookies and a snack, and sometimes even made them lunch. She truly enjoyed being able to talk to customers stopping and to help them pick out a great pumpkin.

Word spread quickly about this very cute 'grandma' that sold pumpkins out of her front yard and the stand became busier and busier. The following year Grandma enlisted the help of her two children that lived in the area, Al and Suzie, and their families. Pumpkin planting became a full scale operation with the family planing by hand in assembly line form. One person would poke a hole in the ground with a rake handle, the next person placed the seed, the next covered the seed, and the last person watered the seek. Two acres of pumpkins were planted by hand for years, eventually moving up to a one row 1938 John Deere planted. The only problem with a planter is the discs turning inside the planter to place the seed were too small and crushed the seed. That meant someone had to ride on the tractor hitch and place the seed one by one in the planter. Al put a 2x4 on the hitch for the kids to sit on and gave them a "hot seat" for cushioning. If someone was over 5 feet tall their feet drug on the ground. It was a labor of love.

Eventually the family was able to move up to a pneumatic one row vacuum planter so we would no longer have to place the seeds by hand. This was such an exciting event, the youngest grandchild was allowed to skip school and go with Al to go pick up the planter in Grand Rapids.

Grandma's road side stand grew in popularity but people started asking to see the animals she had on the farm, so the family added a petting zoo. The following year a tent was added to the stand. Then one of the grand kids suggested adding a corn maze, and the road side stand kept growing to become Grandma's Pumpkin Patch. We were founded on the principles of a good value, farmer type hospitality and a great family experience.
Grandma's Pumpkin Patch was founded in 1994 and has been a part of the Midland community for over 20 years. We are proud that generations of families can enjoy our pumpkin patch! Grandma Sandow passed away in 2013 at 91 years of age. She was the soul of the pumpkin patch, and we continue her tradition of the family farm.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So my daughter is in pre-school. Her Valentine's party was on the Friday before Valentine's day, and I wanted to do something other than candy. She is only 4 and they get soooooooooooooo much candy. She is an only child so she doesn't have siblings to pawn the candy off on, and it sits in the house until someone eats it.........meaning me. I did not want any more candy in our house! Oh and I should mention, I didn't start this project until the day before the party.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I went to Target and strolled the toy isles until I found something different. And I was struck with inspiration! I wanted something farm related, but settled on this tub of wild animals.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Now let me just say, this is not a sponsored post in any way, but if Target is reading this I would not be opposed to writing one : ) I decided to write out little sayings related to each animal on card stock. I quickly created the design in PicMonkey which is an amazing web site to create designs, again not sponsored, but I LOVE PicMonkey!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I wanted a design that would appeal to both boys and girls, without being too pink yet still feel valentinesish. I decided to do an ombre pink for the saying at the top and then a deep red for the "Happy Valentine's Day" part. I then saved all of the pictures on my computer and created a document with four of the sayings to a page. I printed them on card stock and cut them out.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The longest part was cutting all of the cards out....no wait, it was waiting for Ella to personalize each card.

My brother got her as a puppy. When he got her, neither of us were married, and we were renting a house together. I have known Lady since she was a pup. I taught her basic obedience commands, sit, stay, down, and that was all she had the attention for. She is a stereotypical lab. Her personality is "hey look at that!" always happy and always getting into things.

I wanted to make sure Lady wouldn't be afraid of the blow dryer so I used to haul her into the bathroom and pet her while I blow dryed my hair. Lady is going on 10 and she still remembers this. If she hears a blow dryer you better believe she is coming to get pet. As time passes situations change. I moved out of our rental house and got married, and my brother also got married. Lady stayed with my brother and stayed an excitable lab.

My brother got married and has two kids under the age of two. He had a lot going on, so I offered to take Lady for a while.........and I never gave her back. She blended in too well and my daughter fell in love with Lady. This is my letter to thank Lady for putting up with our crazy life.

Thank you Lady for following me room to room, just in case I decided to have a snack and need the crumbs picked up.

Thank you Lady for tolerating a toddler who loves to jump on you, "brush" you by assaulting you with a dog brush, and drag you around the house by your collar. You are never mean to her just give her little bites with your front teeth on the top of the toddler's ears when you have had enough. I assume this is a move a mother dog would do to a young, persistent puppy.

Thank you Lady for accompanying me to every room I go to, including the bathroom. Even when I thought I was being "tricky" by containing the baby in her car seat while I quickly showered, you managed to muscle your way past the door and join us in this fun endeavour.

Thank you Lady for teaching me that even when you are in a scary situation, there is no need to act out. I took you to the vet's office because you had an ear infection. The whole way there, you were excited. And I mean EXCITED! Looking out the window, sniffing everything when we got there, wagging your tail, very excited. When we got inside the office I thought you would get nervous, but you were enjoying the experience and trying to get everyone that walked in the door to pet you. You were a peach for the vet when he looked at your ears, got our medicine and were on our way. You stayed positive in a new situation and I thank you for that reminder.
Thank you for being the best dog a family could ask for. We have had our challenges adjusting to a big dog, like the time you snuck into the food pantry and ate most of the dog food in one day. But we couldn't imagine life with out you.

The time of year everyone indulges, splurges on food they love, or just snacks on items because they are in front of them. To add insult, the TV advertisers feel this is a perfect time to start making you feel guilty about your pants being snug and advertise all their weight loss options. Every other commercial is a weight loss gimmick or program or the latest and greatest piece of exercise equipment.

I used to jog

Then on top of that, due to holiday season all of my social media is flooded with all the direct sales programs for losing weight, working out, or a way to balance your diet, and pro-biotic health of some sort. I am gonna let you guys in on a little secret. I say if these things work for you, then I give you a lot of credit because I'm cheap and lazy when it comes to my health.

I hate buying exercise equipment because I'll use it for a week and then it will collect dust in my closet somewhere. I'm also cheap, I can't justify purchasing something I need to sign up for auto-refills on or need to keep in touch with a sales person to order. Along with being cheap, I'm secretive. I don't want to have to contact someone every time I need to order a product. I want to go to the store, use the u-scan machine and get on with life. I don't want to contact anyone to purchase anything. I guess you can say I'm complicated when it comes to my health and working out.

What I need is accountability. I used to jog and run 5K races. I spent a whole year training to run and competing in local 5K races and even ran an 8K race. But I had a friend I met with to work out. I need someone to compete against when working out. I need to be able to work out with someone else in order to get me there every day. But going back to my statement about being cheap, I don't like to go to the gym. So I realized unless I motivate myself to get in gear, I am never going to do anything about it.

I decided to do a 30 day work out challenge.....but which one? Do I want to focus on my butt, abs, gut, or arms? So I thought, since I'm doing one challenge, how hard can it be to do all of the challenges? I decided to merge together three challenges to make a total body work out challenge that didn't require the gym, exercise equipment, or leaving my house. Now, let me just say I am not a fitness expert, I have no idea if this will work, if it's healthy, or if it's a good idea. I just want to try it, and am making an accountability group to help with with actually doing the work out. So if you want to join me, consult your doctor prior to doing the exercises and if at any time these are too much for you, by all means, stop doing the work out. But if you are game for a crazy adventure, lets work out together. And from now on I will be using exercize with a z, because we are snazzy like that.
Recently I took a really big chance.

Our family owns three businesses. Larkin Food Center, a rural store, Grandma's Pumpkin Patch and an excavation company, Earthmovers of Midland. These businesses keep us hopping. My family purchased Larking Food Center in 2010 and I quit my corporate job to be a manager of the store with my mom. I also have been managing our seasonal business, Grandma's Pumpkin Patch since 2007. Last year an opportunity came up for me and I have also been working as the Director of Fund Development at a local non-profit. It was a fun filled year with lots of growth opportunity both personally and professionally. By working at the non-profit I gained experience in management, learned to work with a Board of Directors, gained exposure in the community, and developed experience in sales. The past year was a busy one, and also a stressful one.

My mom taking selfies with her Dr.

In November of 2015 my mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She is a fighter, and is determined to get through this experience, and I have no doubt she will beat her cancer! However, as a family we wanted to make sure she could focus on the battle ahead and not be weighed down with added stress. The family businesses are a priority, along with family. When something goes wrong were are a "circle the wagons" type group. We all gather together and help each other. My sister took over the book work side of the store and Earthmovers so mom doesn't have to worry about it. My dad, husband and sister's boyfriend help with operations as they can and I quit my job at the non-profit. I will be focusing on the daily operation of the store and maintaining Grandma's Pumpkin Patch. Everything will work out, and the main concern is getting mom healthy again.

Through this process we have been looking to utilize resources we already have. In the family store we had a large empty warehouse....maybe a better description is a warehouse not being used for it's potential. This place was not empty, it was filled with stuff. Along with a warehouse, we have beautiful property. Grandma's Pumpkin Patch is our family farm and we are blessed with beautiful woods, natural landscapes and a wonderful fall setting. These two locations got me thinking and I decided to open MI Studio.

It even had a flash!

I LOVE the art of photography. Always have. I was taking selfies and pictures of my friends back in the 90's with disposable cameras. Now I use my dads's fancy DSLR Nikon camera and have been collecting props and trinkets through the years. I thought, why not utilize what we already have and open a photography studio. However, the thought of taking someone else's photos terrifies me. I would have anxiety over them not liking it or the criticism. MI Studio is a studio for photographers to use.

Many people have the talent and the equipment but not the space for a studio. We have the space! MI Studio is a full photography studio with a graffiti wall, back drops, Savage seamless paper backdrops, a brick wall stage, and an area that looks like the inside of a barn. The studio also has lighting equipment and many, many, many props. The property at Grandma's Pumpkin Patch is available as an outdoor studio with great natural settings and landscaped settings including an antique truck. MI Studio offers a meeting area as well. This space is available for rent for parties or to host classes, meeting space and if you have a membership to MI Studio you can use the space to meet clients. Half of the battle of starting a business is having a space that you can present your brand professionally and MI Studio can help with that.

MI Studio is my leap of faith that has me excited and nervous all at the same time. I hope the community enjoys the space as much as I do. We tracked down Mike's agent's contact info, which turned out to be a former agent, but he was super nice and forwarded it on to the new agent who called me to get some more details. Mike Rowe is very passionate about skilled trades and the lack of skilled workers in the United States. He stared a foundation called Mike Rowe Works lobbying for skilled trades, and raising funds for skilled trades programs. We honored this by hosting a skilled trades day at the pumpkin patch inviting local unions and building programs to have informational booths. It was a lot of fun!
The following year, 2012 my Grandmother turned 90 years old. We thought, what a better way to honor her than putting her in the maze. So all summer we kept the maze design a secret from Grandma and waited until we had pictures of the maze to show her that she, herself, was the maze design. She was stunned and shocked, and a little embarrassed because she was a very modest person. Meet Bob. Bob is a Bourbon Red turkey which was donated to us one week before we opened for the 2014 season. A very nice lady called and asked if we would like a turkey. Not being a stranger to having animals donated to us, I said sure.

When I met with the couple that donated Bob they explained that they ordered 40 different eggs from Ebay, and incubated them to hatch themselves. To their surprise Bob was the ONLY egg that hatched. Apparently the eggs weren't fertilized. I always tell people who want to buy eggs, be sure to use a repuatable source like McMurray Hatchery that way you know you are getting quality product.

Bob was quite pampered at his home being the only turkey. I do beleive they said they kept Bob in the house. However, they lived in the city and were not able to keep Bob. They had intended to raise the turkeys and release them on some property they had north of town, but with Bob being the only bird.......they were worried he wouldn't survive and kept him at home. So in an effort to find a place for Bob, they called and asked Grandma's Pumpkin Patch if we would take him.

When Bob came to us he was about six months old and probably weighed 15 pounds, he was a scrawny bird compared to our full grown turkeys. When I put him in the turkey pen our turkeys started walking over to him all puffed up with their feathers out. Apparently this sared Bob because he turned and slipped between the wires of the pen and got out. So I put him in the pen with Mrs. Peacock and her roomate Mr. Chicken. Well they were not too keen on this new bird in their pen. When animals are in groups or with poultry, flocks, they have to establish a dominance hierarchy. Mrs. Peacock and her roomate started pecking at Bob to let him know that they were the boss. We left Bob and his roomates to work things out.

Later in the afternoon when I checked on Bob, I could not find him. I did not see him anywhere in the pen, and looked in the coop and did not see him either. I thought maybe he escaped, and started yelling his name, which seems ridiculous because how could a turkey know it's name?! To my surprise, Bob replied with a small little cluck that sounded sad and scared. I looked again in the coop and found Bob hiding behind some old plywood we had leaned up against the wall for storage. I moved the plywood and Bob came running out to us, he was obviously very accostome to people. I looked Bob over and saw that Mrs. Peacock and her roomate apparently ganged up on him and broke his wing. Bob needed a new home. He was too small for the turkey pen, not wanted in the peacock pen, he had no where to go. That is how Bob became a free range turkey.
If you came to the pumpkin patch during the 2014 fall season you probably saw Bob running around during the week. On weekends we had to lock Bob up in the barn because people were rather currious and got a bit agressive with Bob. Children were chasing him, adults tried to catch him, poor Bob was getting picked on.

Now that the season is over Bob has full range of the pumpking patch. He was given a "Presidential Pardon" by my dad and escaped being Thanksgiving dinner. Every morning Bob meets my dad at his workshop and walks around the patch with him doing chores. Bob also greets Aunt Sue when she comes over to feed the goats and lets her pet his face. Bob loves to have his eyes rubbed. Bob keeps a close watch on the patch, if a car happens to pull into the patch, he will immediatley chase after it and even down the road. Apparently Bob thinks he is a watch turkey.

Bob chasing my car out of the driveway

Well Bob is getting quite brave in his free range travels and even made it 1/4 mile up the road to the local bus stop. It was a quiet, sunny December afternoon and I was working in the store down the road from the pumpkin patch. All of a sudden I hear a lot of laughing and screaming from the other side of the store. One of the clearks comes over to my desk and said "Bob is out at the bus stop chasing children." I jumped up and looked out the window, and the school bus is still at the stop. The kids are getting off the bus, and Bob is fully puffed up chasing the kids. It was the high school bus, so these children are teen-agers running from a turkey. Needless to say, it was hillarious, but also scary at the same time. As the bus pulled away, cars started to fly by, narrowly missing Bob. I took off on a dead run out the door, and of all the days I wore dress shoes insead of my sneakers. Trying to run with a smooth bottom shoe is difficult. I yelled Bob's name as loud as I could and he turned to look at me, recognized who it was and immediatly smoothed his feathers and ran to me. I think in his travels he got lost and stumbled upon the children and wasn't sure what to do so...... he stared attacking them. When he saw me, he was relieved and ran right to me. The only problem was, Bob was in the middle of a VERY busy road. I had to wave my arms and flag down some cars to stop so I could pick Bob up. I can only imagine what the drivers of the cars were thinking seeing a grown woman run to pick up a turkey.

I picked Bob up, which is difficult because he now weighs around 30 pounds, and is squirmy. I had to cary a 30 pound turkey a 1/4 of a mile back to the pumpkin patch and find someplace to keep him so he would wander again. The children were astonished I could pick the turkey up, and kept asking me questions. "Is that your turkey?!" "I've never sceen a turkey that BIG before" "Where does he live?" After answering their questions and explaining that Bob lives at the pumpkin patch, I carried Bob home. The whole time Bob was clucking to me, I think he was trying to tell me his side of the story. I was just thankful Bob didn't try to peck my face, because afterall eventhough he is a pet, he still is a turkey.

Imagine this big guy chasing you off the bus

I loocked Bob in the barn to keep him from wandering back and told my dad about his adventures that day. I figued my dad could deal with Bob. It was a cold walk back because I ran to get Bob out of the road in such a hurry, I forgot my jacket. The walk to the barn I had a turkey to block the cold December wind, but the walk back, I was freezing. I quickly hurried to the store and called my dad to tell him about his adventourous bird. We let Bob out of the barn after dark so he wouldn't be enticed to wander, he would settle in for the night. Bob cannot stay in the barn long term, he poops everywhere and eats the grain. He is a pesky bird!

Now the neighbors love Bob and think he is hillarious. The one neighber, whose child was chased by Bob, even feeds him in their back yard. Bob is definatley a free range bird, if you are ever on Eastman Rd by the pumpkin patch, slow down because Bob is probably out and about.

Today while shopping at Sam's Club with my 1 year old, it suddenly dawned on me WHY moms as a whole tend to wear yoga pants. It's to make using a public restroom while holding an infant more manageable. Have you ever tried to zip your pants while holding a 1 year old? Not an easy task, my friend!

I had to run to Sam's to get some things for our store, and I thought lugging a baby with me would be no problem. I was wrong. It's winter in Michigan right now, and as an added bonus, it's also unseasonably cold. It is very frigid and even has it's own snazzy term, Polar Vortex. The crisp weather was part of the problem today. I didn't want to take my baby out of her car seat to carry her inside the store. Because she was sleeping, and I NEVER wake a sleeping baby, and she was protected from the wind in her car seat. So on top of all the groceries we were getting today, I also had to lug around the car seat. It took up most of the cart, so I had to be creative in my shopping cart packing.

Ella and I got all of our items on the list and I realized, I needed to use the restroom. This requires so much work that I debated waiting until I got home, but knew I would never make the 30 minute drive home. And then it hit me, I was relieved I wore yoga pants that day. I couldn't leave the baby in the cart outside the bathroom, I knew she would totally be abducted, look at that adorable face. The shopping cart wouldn't fit in the stall, so I had to hold my very squirmy 1 year old like a football pinned between my arm and side, and try to finagle with my pants. I was so glad I didn't have the added challenge of a zipper in the mix. So I have solved the mystery of why mothers around the country wear yoga pants, it is to make using a public restroom with an infant manageable. The only thing that might make it more manageable is this:

I'm not quite sure what exactly that is, and if it is safe, but I am pretty sure it would come in handy!

After we checked out, the Sam's Club cashier stacked the cart differently than I did, and the car seat no longer fit. I ended up holding the baby while trying to maneuver an overfilled shopping cart with a car seat stacked on top. It was not an easy task and when I was 10 feet from the car half of the items fell off and scattered all over the parking lot. I have to say though, a kind passer by stopped and helped me. She came out of no where, but I was so glad to see her. With in seconds of my cart exploding in the parking lot this lady showed up and said "let me help you, get that baby in the car!" The temperature was 0 degrees and windy, so poor Ella was hanging on for dear life while I was trying to pick up my mess. I was soooooooooooo gratefully for this kind stranger. She gathered up the items while I packed Ella up. By the time I got Ella situated, the stranger had picked up all my items and said "Us mom's have to juggle a lot, but sometimes we need help". Yes kind stranger, I was so thankfully you showed up to help. I thanked her a million times and she said no problem. As I was loading items into my car I looked up and saw that she was apparently backing out of her parking space when she saw my shopping cart explode, because her car was in the middle of the aisle, half in a packing spot. She was so kind to come to my rescue, and thank God no one drove into her car while she was helping me!

So, in recap, wear yoga pants. They will make wrangling an infant on a shopping trip easier.......and they are comfy.
It's Almost Tax Season

2014 is rapidly approaching and if you are like my husband and I, we are searching through the house to find things to donate. It is the annual end of the year tax deduction scramble to figure out what we can get rid of.

If you live in the Midland, MI area there are some great organizations accepting donations and several of them even offer pick up service. Donation Quick Info Sheet

And if you are like us, we have old, out of date lap tops laying around that you aren't quite sure what to do with. Well Goodwill now offers recycling service for your computers. They have partnered with Dell in a program called Reconnect to refurbish computers. What a better way to get rid of old computers collecting dust AND get a tax deduction out of it!! Sounds like a win-win situation. Just be sure to wipe the hard drive for security measures.

When donating be sure to keep an itemized list of things being donated. I ALWAYS forget to write things down. Usually two weeks after I turn the list into the accountant, I remember a big ticket item we donated. I always walk away going "oh man, I forgot to list the VCR on the list." Not sure VCRs are considered "big ticket" items any more, but they have to be worth something. To prevent forgetting, I made myself a handy dandy sheet to record my donations as I am putting them in the bag. Get your copy of the itemized donation worksheet here.

The Salvation Army offers a very nice donation value guide because I am never sure of the value. This gives a standard guideline of values, which is super handy and takes the pressure of figuring out how much a shirt you no longer wear is worth.

Keep organized with the itemized donation worksheet

When cleaning the closet for clothes that I can donate, I keep the list and make categories like Men's Dress Shirt, Women's Dress Pants, Women's T-Shirt, Women's Shoes, etc. Then as I load the items into the bag I put a hash mark in the quantity column, look at the donation value guide, and calculate out my total value. Once I get everything loaded into the car and drop it off at the donation center, I take my itemized list with me. Usually when dropping the items off the person at the donation center will ask for a value. I show them the list, and they will give me a receipt. I then staple the receipt to my itemized donation worksheet so I don't lose it. Armed with my itemized list and receipt I am ready for the accountant, or Turbo Tax if you are a do-it-yourself type person (I'm not brave enough for do-it-yourself taxes).

Now, if you don't have anything to donate or aren't keen on giving away clothes you can also donate to the food pantry. I think this is a good time of the year to go through my cabinets and figure out what I'm not going to use. We have a lot of holiday gatherings at our house and things are always left here. We have a tendency to over buy because "too much is better than running out". Which means we buy enough ingredients for a double batch but only make one batch. Then I am left with ingredients to make desserts such as orange fluff. Super good, but after the holidays I am not motivated to make any sweets from the overload of holiday goodies. I like to gather all these extra tempting ingredient boxes and donate them to the local food pantry.

So, good luck in the end of the year donation scramble and maybe I will see you at the donation center.

Today we braved the cold and went out and got our Christmas tree. My husband's family has a tradition of going to a local cut your own tree farm, so we are continuing the tradition with Ella. It is nice to help support a local family and create a tradition with our little one.

All the accessories for tree shopping, including the dog

We decided to go alllllllllllllllllll out for the adventure. This afternoon we were the stereotypical overdo it type family because not only did we take the baby, the camera, and .......the dog! Poor Jason had to pull the cart to carry the tree, the saw to cut the tree down, and had to take the dog on the leash. My hands were full carrying the camera, holding Ella and trying to keep her boots on. They were quite stylish boots with the sequins, but they are a little big yet so they kept falling off.

Before our adventure of picking a tree, I read the post from PBS's web site, How to Pick the Perfect Christmas Tree. The article was quite informative and gave good tips on picking a tree. First before you head out, be sure to measure your ceiling to figure out how tall of a tree you can fit in the house. We have 8 foot ceilings in our living room so we had to go for a 7 foot tree to leave room for the tree stand and star on top of the tree. The tree farm we went to had a measuring stick at the check out and would trim the bottom of the tree for you if the size needed to be adjusted, so we were set with the height of the tree. To ensure you have a fresh tree purchase it from a farm that lets you cut your own. Most trees are cut several weeks before they are delivered to the lots to sell. By cutting it fresh, the needles will last longer.

Success at cutting the tree

Before choosing the tree to take home, pull on the individual branches if the needles fall off easily, the tree is probably not going to last the whole season. If the needles are falling off before it's cut, they will really fall off after it is cut! Be sure to pull the branches apart and inspect the trunk of the tree. Try to find a straight trunk otherwise it will be difficult to balance on the tree stand.

Check out those snazzy boots

After we cut our tree, the tree lot trimmed the bottom of the trunk so we would be able to easily utilize a tree stand. They then measured it to make sure it would fit in our living room, shook it to get all the dead needles and debris out of it and balled it for easy transport. We were then off to go home and set up our tree.

When you first get your tree home remember to let it sit for 24 hours in the house before decorating so the branches can drop. Otherwise if you decorate your tree right away, everything will fall off in the night when the branches drop when adjusting to the warm house.

So now we are on to decorate a tree and try to keep an 11 month old away from the decorations. This is going to be a fun Christmas!

I grew up showing animals, crafts and crops in 4-H and greatly enjoyed the experience. Through 4-H I was able to go on citizen trips to Washington D.C., state exchange trips to Minnesota and Colorado, attend many conferences and meet many new people. For a small town kid 4-H provided many opportunities I would not of had otherwise.

When asked to judge the pageant, I was more than happy to say yes and help support the organization that gave me such great experiences. I am actually a pro at judging pageants as I was previously asked to judge the Miss Auburn/Midland pageant representing the Auburn Jaycees back in 2008.

Never in my life would I ever have thought I would get to judge one beauty pageant let alone two!!! My family kept teasing me and asking if I was going to go professional as a pageant judge. For those of you that know me, you know this is comical because on most days I am lucky if I am able to blow dry my hair. Since having the baby my beauty routine has been drastically cut down. But the pageants aren't about who is the prettiest, or who had the fanciest dress or suit, it's about how well you present yourself and your volunteerism experience. The children that participated in this event were all very serious about their applications. One little boy was so focused and determined, he sat up straight in his chair the entire pageant, not slouching once.

While judging the pageant I realized, this is a great way for these young adults to prepare for adulthood and came up with four important things to keep in mind when participating in a pageant:

1. Communication - Many participants were very, very, very nervous. I am sure they were far from their comfort zone because when I scanned the faces on the participants waiting for the pageant to start the sheer look of horror showed. I give all the participants credit for stepping out of their comfort zone and being in the pageant. However, when interviewing for a job if they cannot clearly communicate, they will not be selected for the position. By participating in the pageant many were in fact participating in their first interview. After having an interview with 50 spectators watching you, a job interview with one other person would be a cinch.

2. Accountability - The candidates had to answer a question about the information from their application. They had no idea what would be asked of them, the organizing committee reviewed their applications prior to the pageant and asked them each a specific question. One person had to explain how to show their animal, another had to further elaborate on a volunteer organization they belong to. If applicants had exaggerated information on their application it showed, this is a great way to teach children about honestly representing themselves.

3. Self Representation -My mom still pesters me to stand up straight and points out my bad posture. I now realize how important it is to represent yourself. Life isn't a beauty pageant, but how you dress and present yourself on a daily basis is important. When at work, if you show up in pajama pants and a t-shirt now matter how good you are at your job, you are probably going to be passed over for a promotion. You don't need the fanciest dress to win a pageant, you need to dress appropriately, speak clearly, and remember to not fidget. Many participants were bobbing up and down on their toes, ruffling the tulle of their dress, staring at their boots (both the girls and boys) and looking nervous. Remember to stand up straight, dress appropriately, do not fidget and speak with confidence.

4. Losing Gracefully - It is important to learn how to loose. Not everyone can be the King or Queen of the pageant, but it is important to try and support the person that did win. Learn from the experience and at the next opportunity try again. There were 30 children trying for four positions. By trying and not succeeding it teaches the kids to continue to try for their goals and give them the experience to be better prepared for the next pageant.

Overall it was a great experience and I was very pleased to help out. The pageant was a great start to the Midland County Fair, and something I would highly recommend for children able to participate.
